Timeless: the Wrap Dress by Diane von Furstenberg

From left: The original wrap dress on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The dress today in silk jersey and a variation in cashmere.

“Feel like a woman. Wear a dress.” Thirty-five years ago, Diane von Furstenberg launched her iconic wrap dress with that slogan. Five million dresses later, in 1976, Diane was featured on the cover of Newsweek and hailed as the most marketable designer since Coco Chanel. It’s easy to see why the dress was such a hit: The a-line skirt floats away from the hips, making the cinched waist look smaller. The dress also subtly emphasizes the bust. The jersey fabric drapes like a dream; you can roll it into a ball and it won’t get wrinkled.

In the mid-1980s Diane left the fashion business. She came back in 1997 with a small line of silk jersey dresses that she sold on TV. After the line sold out within a day, Diane decided to relaunch her line in New York. Today, she is more successful than ever. In addition to the wrap dress, Diane expanded the line to include sportswear, swimwear, accessories, cosmetics, fine jewelry, and luggage. Several department stores carry the line, and by January there will be 22 freestanding boutiques, including locations in LA, New York and Miami.

And the dress is more popular than ever for women of all ages. Here are some tips for wearing the dress:

  • For winter, wear boots or booties and opaque tights that match your footwear.
  • Wear a camisole underneath if you’re uncomfortable with the low-ish neckline.
  • Replace the sash with a wide belt; try patent leather for a modern take.
  • Wear a jacket over the dress for a more business-like look.
  • Layer on beads of different lengths to pull attention up to your face.
