Russian Military Gets Fashionable

The Russian Military unveiled a new line of uniforms, that according to all reports are quite fashionable. Other than these two photos I’m having a hard time finding anything, so if you come across something let me know in the comments. The uniforms were unveiled yesterday at fashion parade in the Defense Ministry by designer Valentin Yudashkin.

The Horrors of the Cocoon Silhouette

One fashion trend that should have stayed in hibernation is the cocoon silhouette. This trend hit the markets in 2007, partly inspired by the balloon styles which weren

Swing into style with the trapeze

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Get ready for the circus as spring trapeze silhouettes swing back in style.

Trapeze is in no way a new trend and has seen its share of ups and downs throughout the years. The first designer to make a huge splash with the trapeze was a young Yves Saint Laurent who took over the Christian Dior line in 1958. He created an entire trapeze line that just blew away the Paris runway elite. The design is based on a tight shoulder and bodice which gradually extends into a flowing, full shape.

Spring 2008 Accessories Preview: Expect a Color Pop

Neiman Marcus Spring Accessories Preview

Need a quick break from your real life of frigid temperatures and holiday chaos? Then take a moment out to “Think Spring” - Neiman Marcus did.

The exclusive retail giant offered a sneak peek at some of Spring 2008’s Fashion Accessory Trends at their twice-yearly preview on Wednesday. And what did they find? A color pop!

  • Bright hues such as coral, pink, red, purple, aqua and emerald green make a statement in spring. Since beige is predicted to take over for wintertime’s gray as the neutral du jour, these glorious colors will add an enticing splash of color to amp up any outfit and make a statement.
  • Color-block handbags from Prada and Marc Jacobs lend themselves to the bright trend and will, no doubt, spawn plenty of less-expensive knock-off options.
  • Expect to see a continuation of metallics and patent leathers into spring. This time, neon and candy-colored patents replace black and red, while gold knocks silver out of the top spot for metallics.
  • Prints such as paint-splatters and other artsy designs will show up on shoes and scarves.
  • Expect to see plenty of unusual and unexpected heels throughout the designer lines, including a flower-shaped heel from Prada.
  • Hallelujah! The giant handbag may have finally met the blessed shrink-ray, as medium-sized bags are expected to steel the show next season. If you’re only splurging on one bag for spring (yeah, right!), make it white.
  • Neiman Marcus will feature an expanded handbag selection from Christian Louboutin for Spring, including a neon pink patent leather choice.
  • Following the worldly trend of spring clothing seen on the runways, accessories with a tribal flair will also state their presence.

The only prediction we’re not loving so far is the “gladiator” sandal trend, considering it is virtually impossible to create the illusion of never-ending legs with closed-up shoes. Hopefully this is one trend that will turn out better than we expected.

Hmmm…Is it Spring yet?

Feathers: Not Just For Dusting Anymore

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Feather Handbag

There have been many unusual fashion trends throughout the ages, and while most have come and gone, feathers seem to enjoy periodic resurgences - and this is one of those times.

Back at the fashion forefront once again, feathers are now being seen on handbags; as trim on dresses, sweaters and tanks; trimming gloves, scarves and hats, and even sometimes standing alone on skirts. While not usually noted for their wearability, feathers can add a fun and dramatic punch to an otherwise ho-hum ensemble, or they can jazz up an already look-at-me showstopper.

Obviously, to avoid looking like Big Bird’s Little Sis, feathers should be used sparingly and in the proper context. Unless you’re employed in the fashion industry, feathers generally do not have a place at work, nor are they completely appropriate in conservative instances. Otherwise, using feathers in accent pieces can be a fun foray into daring fashion.

Think you’d like to give them a try? Look for pieces with feathers in red, black or winter white. Combinations or variations of brighter colors stand out beautifully against black and pack a powerful punch. Try to avoid colors such as pumpkin orange, canary yellow, electric blue and kelly green, which tend to look more like craft store add-ons rather than sophisticated fashion enhancers.

If you’re already a feather fashionista, drop us a line to let us know how you wear your fluff. We’re always game for fresh takes on fabulous ideas.

Knit Wit: The Latest in Cozy Fashions

Burberry ProrsumOld Navy DressAndrew GnAlloy Dress

From high style to everyday casual, mature and sophisticated to young and playful, knit dresses answer the call of women hoping to reign both warm and stylish this season.

Found in all price ranges, knits boast a level of allure that few runway looks can. A look suited for almost any woman, knits will be seen everywhere from the grocery store aisles to holiday balls. Here’s why:

  • Knits are warm and sensible. While we’ll never dispute the elegance of a gorgeous gown, similar results can be achieved when pairing a chunky turtleneck with a sleek, satin skirt and feminine accessories - and you’ll feel much less vulnerable to any adverse weather conditions. An upswept ‘do, or a low, side ponytail and a smoky eye complete this daring and dramatic look.
  • When paired with flats and opaque tights (or bare legs), knit dresses can be casual and comfy, yet very fashion-forward. If you’re extra daring, add a pair of legwarmers to pump up the look. A casual hairstyle and natural makeup will make it all seem so effortless.
  • Most knits lend themselves beautifully to accessory experimentation. Try adding a skinny belt for waist definition, a knit beret for a splash of funk, and different tight shades or boot heights for maximum outfit variation.
  • Knits are generally flattering to most body types. If you’re feeling the pinch after a holiday buffet splurge, a knit dress can help disguise those extra rum and eggnogs. Even expecting women can take advantage of an empire waist style for movement and breathability.

The knit options shown above run the gamut, price-wise. You can find styles from top tier designers as well as at bargain retailers like Old Navy and Alloy. So cuddle up and enjoy the holidays and cold weather this season. With knits as toasty as these, even the most frightful of weather conditions will seem almost welcome.

Hottest Fall Fashions

Monday, November 19th, 2007

If you are looking to add a few key pieces to your wardrobe this fall, be selective and make choices that are versatile yet follow the hottest fashion trends. Shop around and find items that you love. Choose chic fashions that can go from the office to a night out on the town.

Here, we take a look at some the hottest fashion items this season.

Fall Boots and Shoes

Christian Louboutin BootiesSuede Booties
Somewhere between the boot and the shoe, we find the bootie. Booties are a little shorter than ankle boots and come in a variety of fabrics and styles with every type of heel from stiletto to wedge. Right now, the trend in booties is all about texture. Look for booties in rich suedes, snake-embossed leather or slick patent.

These Christian Louboutin suede booties come in toffee brown and feature a fringed front and Louboutin’s signature red heel. You can find these booties at Neiman Marcus. These are a luxury choice at $1145.

ImageMenswear-Inspired Lace-Up Pumps
Lace-up pumps are extremely popular this season. Here is one of my favorites for fall - the Claudia Ciuti Luella Oxford. The lace-up style is indicative of the menswear-inspired trend. However, the thin heel, pointy toe and shiny patent leather keeps them feminine. These pumps are available at Nordstrom for $332.

Of a similar vein are these Bally Glania Oxfords. This pair is built for comfort, featuring a rounded toe and a stacked heel. They are also at Nordstrom and are slightly more expensive at $575.

Grey Peep-Toes
From footwear to headwear, grey is dominating the runways and shops this season. Choose peep-toe shoes in various shades of grey from cement to charcoal. Grey is a versatile neutral that can be worn with just about anything. You can wear a pair of grey peep-toe pumps with everything from a basic black pantsuit to a jewel-tone print dress. These light grey slingbacks from Fendi feature a platform sole and cute peep-toe. You can get them from eLuxury for $605.

Fall Pants

Wide Leg PantsWide-Leg Pants
From slacks to jeans, the look for fall is wide-leg pants. It looks like low-rise pants are gone as the new wide-leg styles also feature a high waist. Wear wide-leg pants with a crisp white button down shirt or fitted sweater for an up-to-date look. Don’t wear anything baggy up top, or it will just weigh down the whole outfit. Wide-pants are usually not flattering on short women. Therefore, you might want to skip this trend, or look for pants that aren’t too wide, if you are under 5′3.

Cropped Pants
In the past, many women just wore cropped pants in warm weather months. Now we are seeing cropped pants in twill, tweed, wool and other winter fabrics. This season, choose cropped pants in brown, gray and olive. Wear them with thin layered sweaters and a pair of boots. These herringbone cropped pants from Barrie Pace are on sale at the moment for just $99.

Fall Skirts and Dresses

Bubble DressBubble Dresses/Tulip Skirts
Bubble dresses and tulip skirts are in this season. These styles don’t look very flattering on the hanger. But when you try them on, they are very cute. They can disguise problem areas such as thick thighs or a little tummy. Look for bubble dresses and skirts in a variety of fabrics from velvet to satin. These styles are particularly cute in jewel tones such as sapphire blues, ruby reds and emerald greens. But they also look great in basic neutrals, as well as shocking brights like orange and yellow.

Wrap Dresses
The wrap dress looks great on most figure types. These dresses are popular this season in stretch jersey knits. At Nordstrom, you can find a wide selection of wrap dresses, including this JS Collection stretch wrap dress. At only $168, it would make a great edition to your wardrobe. It’s a simple style that can be made a lot more glamorous by pairing it with glitzy jewelry and other accessories.

Fall Tops

Satin Feminine TopFeminine Blouses
Tops stay frilly and feminine this fall with unique necklines and billowy sleeves. Look for blouses in lace, satin and other fine fabrics. This Nanette Lepore Hollywood blouse features puffed 3/4 length sleeves and a v-neck. It comes in winter white for a chic, stylish look. This satin blouse is $310 at Neiman Marcus.

Tunic Sweaters
Long tunic sweaters are very hot this fall. These sweaters can be worn over leggings or with a mini-skirt and tights. You can wear them casually loose or with a belt for a more pulled-together look. This metallic tunic sweater from Spiegel features a deep v-neck and raglan sleeves. It’s on sale right now for only $39 from Spiegel.com.

Fall Headwear

Burberry HeadbandPatent Headbands
Pull your hair back in style with a patent headband. These thick headbands are very hot for fall. This Burberry quilted patent headband comes in both black and berry and is available at Neiman Marcus for $125.

Newsboy Caps
The newsboy cap is an old school style that stays fresh this fall in prints and textured fabrics. This Eugenia Kim Newsboy from Bluefly.com features a tan and black houndstooth pattern that is sure to turn heads. It’s on sale right now for only $67.99.

When shopping this season, don’t buy a piece just because it’s trendy or refuse to buy it just because it’s not. Instead choose pieces that you love and become a trendsetter yourself!

Leg Warmers from Hollister

We don’t mean to evoke nightmarish Flashdance images here, but guess which 80’s trend is making a monster comeback? Yep, legwarmers. Can you believe it? It seems so hard to believe that these puppies are making a second go-’round already. Thankfully, this time designers have ix-nayed the mega-slouch look in favor of a more refined cut. And yes, you’ll find all sorts of crazy colors and patterns, but those are balanced with classic knit styles and neutral colors, similar to the pair above from Hollister. (more…)
