When it comes to celebrity weddings, there’s extravagant and there’s over-the-top. Of course, Eva Longoria got married in a French chateau with 200 of her closest friends in attendance–no one expects an A-list celebrity to have a simple backyard wedding. But some celebrity weddings are talked about well after the marriage is over. Here are five for the ages.

5. The Thetan wedding:
Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes.

Tom and Katie took their vows in a 15th-century castle outside Rome. Guests included Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, Jennifer Lopez and David and Victoria Beckham. Armani himself designed Katie’s dress. Yada, yada, yada.

It’s the backstory that makes this $2 million wedding so interesting. And by backstory, I mean Cruise’s full-blown craziness, which first manifested itself on Oprah.

First Tom looks as though he’s trying to pin Oprah with a wrestling hold; then he jumps up and down on the couch; and finally a dazed Katie–excuse me, Kate–is brought out looking very much like she’s being held against her will by a deranged cult leader. Hmmm …

Then there was the Brooke Shields brouhaha in which Cruise criticized the model-turned-actress for taking anti-depressants to fight off postpartum depression. This dovetailed nicely with the silent birth of daughter Suri. By the time the pair held their November 2006 wedding, the whole world was watching. Everyone kind of expected an implosion, but the affair turned out to be a rather staid event, which is remarkable in itself, really.

4. You’re fired:
Donald Trump & Marla Maples

Remember this one? Trump’s most recent marriage to model Melania Knauss, a tasteful affair with a reception for 400 at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate, was no match for this 1,300-guest extravaganza held at the Plaza Hotel. Donald and Marla were the scandal du jour of the 1990s, starting when first wife Ivana caught on to the affair and staged a dramatic face off with Miss Hawaiian Tropics on the slopes in Aspen. The Donald and Ivana fought their divorce in the tabloids, with Ivana emerging victorious in a fight over the couple’s prenup.

Soon after, Donald married Marla. The wedding was immortalized on $5 Taj Mahal casino chips. Trump likely melted the chips down after the marriage ended four years later. Both Ivana and Marla were invited to wedding number three. Both declined to attend.
