Television shows oftentimes depict the latest fashion trends. If you are a fashion expert, a budding fashionista or just curious about the current trends, you will enjoy the fashions on Gossip Girl.
If you don’t watch Gossip Girl - you really should. This fun yet dramatic TV series on the CW Network is based on the popular novel series of the same name by Cecily von Ziegasar.
The Gossip Girl storyline revolves around a group of young socialites on New York’s Upper East Side. The girls deal with sex, drugs and other teenage problems while attending elite academic institutions.
The ensemble cast is led by Serena van der Woodsen (played by Blake Lively) and her best friend Blair Waldorf (played by Leighton Meester), along with many others. One of the best things back Gossip Girl is the fashions.
Though sometimes outrageous, the girls often wear clothes depicting some of today’s hottest trends. Here are some of the terrific fashions seen on the set of Gossip Girl as of late.
Michelle Trachtenberg, who plays the mean girl Georgina Sparks, is Serena’s arch nemesis. Michelle has a loyal following from her days as Dawn on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Here Michelle combines a variety of today’s hottest fashion trends.
Oversized sunglasses
From Hollywood celebrities to stay at home moms, it seems everyone is wearing oversized sunglasses this season. Fendi, Michael Kors, Dolce & Gabbana, Jimmy Choo, Versace and just about every other designer is offering a selection of oversized sunglasses. However, you don’t spend a bundle on this trend, you can find a variety of very affordable oversized glasses at places like Sunglass Warehouse.
Layered necklaces
One of the most popular jewelry trends this season is to wear three or four necklaces of varying lengths and styles. You can combine beaded necklaces with gold chains and jewel pendants.
Skirts over leggings
Though I personally despise this fashion trend, many women can make it work. Choose a skirt that is A-line or pleated. Don’t make it too short or it will look like a tutu.
Black nail polish
Last season blue and black nail polish made a comeback and that trend is continuing. From the set of Gossip Girl to the red carpet, today’s stars are wearing black nail polish.
Here Blake Lively wears a ruffly yellow print dress that is perfect for a spring party. What’s great about this dress is that it’s feminine without being conservative. The low-cut neckline shows off what Blake has to offer without being too sleazy either.
Floral prints
Flower patterns are hugely popular right now. Look for summer dresses in floral prints. You can choose from pale pastels or dramatic brights. Florals aren’t just for dresses. Floral print shoes are extremely trendy. Slingback sandals, high heel pumps and easy-to-wear slides are all available in fantastic floral prints. Betsey Johnson and Naughty Monkey are two brands that offers a variety of floral print shoes.
Strappy sandals
Sexy, strappy sandals can be worn with everything from jeans and capri pants to party dresses and evening wear. Though Blake wears black sandals here, metallics and bold colors are also trendy. You don’t need to spend a lot of money on sandals. Many online shops such as Zappos.com, Heels.com and Endless.com offer strappy sandals at very affordable prices.
Thick belts
Cinch your waist with a thick belt. Patent leather belts are extremely popular right now in black, white and bright spring colors. If you are thick waisted, don’t wear a thick belt. Instead, select a chain or sash belt and wear it slung low on your hips. This will lengthen and slim your torso.
Blake, like Michelle before her, also wears several layered necklaces in this next photo. Tribal jewelry, using influences from Native American, African, Eastern Indian and other tribes, is one of today’s biggest jewelry trends.
Blake wears tribal jewelry and a shiny gold print trench coat. Trench coats were popular in the winter and can be worn throughout the spring in cool weather. Look for trench coats in metallics and light pastels.
More Florals
Leighton Meester looks adorable here in this pink floral print halter trapeze dress. (What’s with the boots?!) Ignoring her choice in footwear, the rest of the outfit is cute. The giant flower at the neckline is something that is seen in many fashions right now.
Hoop Earrings
She wears this feminine dress with hoop earrings and a cuff bracelet. Hoop earrings are one type of jewelry that you can never have enough of. Fortunately hoop earrings don’t have to be expensive. If you like to change your earrings on a daily basis, splurge for one expensive pair of hoop earrings, then buy a bunch of cheap pairs in a variety of styles, colors and patterns. As long as the posts are good material that won’t infect your ears, the rest of the earring can be inexpensive. You can choose gold or silvertone hoop earrings, bright vinyl hoops, rhinestone studded hoops and many more. Online shops, such as Forever 21, offers a wide assortment of hoop earrings that are under $10 a pair.
Femme Fatale
Here Leighton changes her look completely, transforming to a femme fatale of decades gone by. Though you might not want to wear this type of style on a regular basis. You can definitely pick pieces from her outfit and incorporate them into your everyday wardrobe.
Patent Leather Pumps
Patent leather high heel pumps are always in style. Instead of wearing black again this season, add a splash of color with blue, red, yellow or orange patent pumps. Pointy toe pumps are feminine, but round toe pumps are also stylish ala Jackie O.
Hats!
If the only type of hat you wear is a baseball cap on the weekends, mix things up by adding a classy hat to your wardrobe. Spend the afternoon at the mall and try on dozens of hats until you find one you love. Straw hats, bucket hats, fedoras, berets, derbys and other hats can all work if you where them with confidence. You can wear a hat with everything from casual attire to evening wear. Hats can add a touch of culture and class to a business suit, or add a little funk to a pair of jeans.
