The pencil skirt was a favorite in the 1950s, returned to the fashion scene in the 1980s, and has been a mainstay ever since. This slim fitting skirt has a straight, narrow cut and normally falls to the knee. A pencil skirt can have a slit or back pleat for ease of movement.
Introduced in the 1940s by designer Christian Dior, the pencil skirt was quickly adopted by women everywhere, particularly for the office. In the 1980s, the pencil skirt was a part of the “power suit,” but in recent years these skirts have been worn everywhere – from the office to a night out on the town.
What to Wear with a Pencil Skirt – Of course at work, you can wear a pencil skirt with a blazer or suit jacket and prim-and-proper pumps. However, you can also wear it with a fitted sweater and Mary Janes, a ruffled blouse and platform sandals, a cardigan and ballet flats, or even a tee and knee-high boots. You can tuck in your top to lengthen the look of your legs and put some emphasis on your waistline. You can also wear a longer, hip-length top to lengthen your torso or create a more casual look. A skinny belt around the waistband of a pencil skirt can also define your waist. A thick belt can be flattering too, but not if you are short-waisted.
How to Wear a Pencil Skirt – Because the pencil skirt hugs your body all the way to the knees, it takes some getting used to its restrictive style. Walking in shorter strides is a must (particularly if there’s no slit or back pleat). And getting out of the car can be difficult at first. These skirts can make you feel like a librarian at first. However, paired with the right top and accessories, the pencil skirt can be a very versatile, trendy part of your wardrobe.
