Fall Trends: The Pea Coat

When you are shopping for clothes, look for pieces that are not only stylish and trendy, but also durable and versatile. One classic piece that every woman should have in her fall wardrobe is a pea coat. These classic coats are defined by their double-breasted fronts and broad lapels. And though these types of coats have been in existence since the early 19th century, they still retain the same classic design and shape today.

Though originally worn by sailors, pea coats are now worn by civilians – both men and women. Pea coats are normally made of wool, but they also can be created from almost any other fabric – from polyester to tweed to silk.
Navy, black and charcoal gray pea coats are versatile choices because they can be worn with almost anything. Red and green are popular colors for women’s pea coats, as well. However in recent years, plaid patterns and bright colors are becoming more common in pea coats.

If you are looking for a pea coat with a modern twist, consider a coat that is a little longer or a little shorter than the traditional hip-length. Cropped pea coats are flattering to thin women. Longer pea coats that flare out at the hem or fall to mid-thigh are especially nice for women who carry their weight in the stomach or hips.

Most department stores carry pea coats. You can find the Steve Madden Plaid Pea Coat at Macy’s. In rich red plaid, this coat makes a big statement. It features slightly puffed shoulders and tab detailing at the back. This medium-weight coat is created from a wool blend and has a full lining, notched collar and slit pockets. This plaid pea coat is available for under $200. Though it’s trendy, this coat is also classic enough that it can be worn year after year.
