Though summer is just beginning, it’s time to look ahead to fall and some of the fashion trends that are emerging for the season. When fall arrives, unpack your sweaters, coats and boots - the staples in your wardrobe. Then head to the malls, boutiques and thrift shops to find the latest in fall fashion. Select versatile pieces of clothing, jewelry and accessories that you can mix and match to stretch your shopping dollars.

If you select an item that is quirky, trendy and you aren’t sure that you will wear very often, then don’t spend a fortune. However, if you find a classic piece that you will wear for years to come, then it’s wise to splurge a little bit.

Here is a look at some of the fashion trends to expect for fall, in terms of both clothing and jewelry.

The Neutrals

This season look for your basic neutrals (black, brown and grey) with some emphasis on navy and camel. Last season grey was huge for fall. And though I’m not sure any neutral will be as popular this year, you can’t go wrong with navy and camel. If you want to add some flavor to your neutrals, neon accent colors will be very trendy.

Cocktail Fabrics

White Cotton Sweaterdress from Old Navy

When the weather cools down, the fabrics become a little richer and more luxurious. Plaids and tweeds will be popular in everything from coats to shoes to handbags. Also look for velvets in jewel tones, such as amethyst, sapphire and ruby. Feathers, fur and sequins will be prevalent not just in formal wear, but also every day sweaters, coats and dresses too. Thick over sized knit sweaters and sweater dresses will be the norm.

The Silhouettes

High-waisted pencil skirts and wide-legged pants (but not too wide) will definitely be in. The mixing of different silhouettes and unusual fabrics will also be popular. A thin body-hugging knit sweater may be paired with a frilly bubble skirt. A lace billowy top might be coupled with a pair of straight tweed pants. Flapper style dresses will be popular, as will one shoulder dresses and tops with big bows.

The Jewelry

Layered necklaces will continue to be all the rage. Mixing chunky beaded and jeweled necklaces along with gold and silver chains really makes a statement. Also necklaces with big bold colorful baubles will continue to be popular from summer through the fall. Thick enamel bracelets embellished with jewels, rhinestones and crystals will also be trendy. My favorite piece of jewelry that will be hot for fall is the cocktail ring. Cocktail rings are rings that feature one very big central stone. They can be a little gaudy for everyday wear. However, they are a must for parties and special occasions.

Swarovski Crystal Cocktail Ring

If you can’t afford to splurge on a lot of new jewelry, don’t worry. You can find cocktail rings for starting as little as $20. In addition to your regular department stores and jewelry shops, be sure to look at estate sales, antique shops, and thrift stores for vintage cocktail rings. These type of big, bold rings are timeless. Look for cocktail rings that feature a large stone in the center or a cluster of stones in interesting shapes.
